Multiuse Bike Machine – Innovate or die competition
This is my multiuse bike machine.
Its functions include:
-knife sharpener, to maintain farming equipment
-grinder, for grinding coffee, grain, spices, or to make animal feed
-corn degrainer to simplify and accelerate a necessary but time consuming task in processing corn
-electric generator for off the grid lighting
-blender to improve nutrition and add enable home based micro industry
-water pump, capable of moving 5 gallons per minute
The tools are mounted on tables which attach to a simple 3 point mounting system. The tool tables can be switched easily using only one tool. Changing attachments usually takes under 5 minutes.
The design is simple yet versatile and I am still working on developing more attachments.
Similar pedal powered machines have proved to be very useful to subsistence farmers in rural Guatemala. My design combines these 6 machines into one simple design, to streamline production and lower costs. While it is unlikely any one user will want all 6 tools, the machine provides more utility at a lower cost.
All of the parts are locally available and it can be built and maintained with a minimal number of tools.

Some of the tools are driven by friction (an axle rubbing against the tire). Changing the inflation pressure helps control the friction for those tools.
For the chain driven tools, the tire is actually filled with cement and acts as a flywheel.

The sharpener is …
The sharpener is not meant for home use, it’s intended to enable micro industry. There is a demonstrated demand for similar designs. Similarly, a woman’s group in Guatemala has been quite successful using pedal powered blenders to make organic shampoo for sale.
No one user is expected to need all of the attachments, but they allow any user to expand the utility of their machine with minimal extra cost or effort.

I’ve spent over 20 years living in developing countries across Asia, Africa, and the South Pacific. Your invention should have won over the Aquaduct, which is extremely unsustainable in the third world and is why western countries have so much trouble effecting change overseas. Your invention has huge potential because it’s a low-tech, inexpensive unit that is easy to build and repair from local materials, and can be adapted to local needs. You have an awesome invention, keep promoting it!

This is totally over engineered in my view. A knife needs sharpening only occasionally. And it can be sharpened using nothing more than a rock and a small amount of water. It is hardly economical to build this contraption to do such a trivial task.
