Incandescent bulbs augment central heating systems. What are the true savings of low energy bulbs?
An incandescent bulb is a very efficient reasonably cheap though low power air immersion heater, which also provides instant lighting. It may not be positioned in the best place and electricity is not the cheapest form of energy, but it does add heat thereby causing the central heating system to switch off earlier, saving gas, oil or electricity. The energy ratings on low energy bulbs are not a true indication of possible savings, are they?
You are quite right, – in the winter that extra heat is great.
They can be sold as “Winter bulbs”.
Of course in the summer we don’t need / want that extra heat.
So in late spring – change to low energy bulbs, – summer bulbs.

try some from a dollar store or walmart. they are bright and pretty and you get a low bill in regards to buying them

It is true that the ‘wasted’ energy of a regular bulb is given off as heat. but this is only useful on cold days. Gas boilers produce heat far more efficiently than electric light bulbs. And as hot air rises, bulbs on the ceiling aren’t exactly the ideal place to produce heat for your home

Electricity is an expensive way to heat – use gas instead if pos. Great savings can be made if you keep your home well insulated – double-glazing, etc. Switch things off when not in use. Electricity is the cheapest way to light your home and use of the low-energy light bulb is cheapest.
