2008 Fuel Economy Comparison: Prius v Jetta v Focus v Smart

These days there are a lot of small cars pounding their chests and claiming they get the best gas mileage around. Well, we got tired of the talk and decided to settle the score. Right here, right now!
We picked three cars from our long-term fleet known for squeezing extra miles out of every gallon of gas: the spunky 2008 Smart Fortwo with a 1.0-liter, three-cylinder engine, the thrifty 2008 Ford Focus SES coupe with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and a 2005 Volkswagen Jetta TDI, with its legendary 1.9-liter “TDI” diesel engine. Then we added a heavily favored gasoline-electric hybrid to the mix: a 2008 Toyota Prius.

That has smaller passenger and cargo room, does not meet current safety standards so its lower weight, not tested on current mpg standards so get rated higher than it really is and your 103 mpg is just plain … wrong. Scooters can maybe get over 100mpg… not normal sized cars.

Not to mention the torque from the jetta is awesome for a little car, once the turbo kicks in you’re gone, you have no problems merging or getting out of the way. Diesel is the way to go, i just wish we had more diesel cars over here in America. The only thing Prius’ are good for is target practice.

Because the Prius is not offered in Manual, that is Toyotas fault, not VW’s fault. Therefore toyotas best mpg prius should be going against the best mpg TDi. If the Prius was available in stick then it would be fair.

The Focus is rubbish according to this.
The big problem …
The big problem with this video is they used an Automatic TDi. If they had a 5-speed (not offered by Toyota) they would have won every test, except the gridlock city traffic, hands down. Not fair to compare the two in a MPG test and not give each car the best MPG model possible.
I own both Toyota …
I own both Toyota and Volkswagen. Our 2002 Jetta TDI at 3000 feet above sea level we averaged between 38-42 mpg city and 54- 60 mpg highway. Over all best highway mileage was 63mpg. Audi is owned by VW and uses the same engines. The Audi A2 TDI is more fuel efficient then any of those in this test. Getting average of 80mpg imperial mixed driving.

3. I can tell you from personal experience that Prius gas mileage varies. If you don’t pay attention at all to how you are driving, you will get mid 40 mpg. But if you hypermile (average 55 mpg on highway and don’t over accelerate after a stop sign, you will get 58-60 mpg. I do it all of the time when I am watching my miles. This is not always possible when I am in a rush. But if you want to max your miles…

1. Prius is a mid size car. Comparing it to a focus or the smart car is unfair. Of course a focus costs $10k or $15k, it is a base line car, small car.
2. Unfortunately, American cars are not nearly as reliable as Toyotas. The typical focus or smart car will start costing you thousands/year after five years, while the Prius won’t. Toyotas are better made. You will see lots of them on the road for 200-300k miles. Look at the resale values as confirmation.

I’d take the vw tdi, much more fun to drive then a prius and it looks better
